Not just a salon but a lifestyle space for family & friends
Sam Woo welcomes you to enjoy a refreshing ice-lemon tea in his studio. More than just a casual invitation, it underlines his faith in the culture he has created. For more than just a salon, the boss of MODE Studio at Wheelock Place has created a space where both the client and hairstylist are happy to be at and not just for haircuts. MODE Studio is a place to hang out with friends and family – a social and lifestyle space for everyone to enjoy.
“Hair services are very personal and there are different hair salons for different markets,” says Sam. “For MODE Studio, we would like to be known for quality service, for being a quality space with a good vibe, and where people can come relax and have a nice drink, and enjoy our signature ice-lemon tea,” he adds. So what’s this intriguing ice-lemon tea and what’s special about it? “This is a recipe from our tea lady – she has been working with us for quite a number of years and I still don’t know how she does it but our clients love it. “There are clients who come specially for that ice-lemon tea, so they’d have a wash and blow, and drink that magical ice-lemon tea to start their day,” explains Sam. But if ice-lemon tea is not your cup of tea, there’s champage and prosecco, too, along with other beverages. “It’s also a family-friendly salon, with our clients bringing their kids, because we have the space for them. “As a father of two children myself, I love kids, and would play with the children of clients whenever I see them. We also have gifts for young children, and when they are happy coming to the salon with their parents, it gives me satisfaction, knowing we have a family- friendly, child-friendly culture here. Sometimes children don’t like accompanying their parents to the salon but we have never seen such a problem here! We try our best to create the best environment for our clients, and if parents can enjoy the luxury of our hair services knowing their children are properly entertained, then that’s just great!” |

MODE Studio boasts hairstylists from various parts of Asia – Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Korea. “It’s like a fusion salon much like a fusion restaurant, with different styles from people of different cultures, not just one fixed style. “But what is basic and yet paramount for MODE Studio is service – we want the best service for our clients so they feel pampered and enjoy the experience at our salon.” Among the many who have enjoyed the experience at MODE Studio are the T’ang Quartet’s violinists Ang Chek Meng and Ng Yu-Ying, who are regulars.
“Yu-Ying and I met Sam when he was working for Kim Robinson. Sam was assigned to take care of us and we have known him for more than 10 years and we trust him implicitly with our hair. Everytime I go to him, I’ll tell him I have a concert or a photoshoot and he’d do the rest – I don’t need to decide anything. “Sam is innovative and also very natural, very spontaneous, so the hairstyle is never the same each time. It’s not a formula he works with, but feel – and you can feel him creating something. I really enjoy that experience.” Yu-Ying, meanwhile, is grateful to Sam for helping him maintain a sharp image and is a loyal client of Hong Kong-born hairstylist. “I have been following this handsome guy, Sam, for more than a decade – he has taught me how to groom my hair so that I can look more presentable in front of my audience. And I am still following him faithfully,” says Yu-Ying. And that makes their shows better, too. “He makes us look better!” exclaims Chek. “I feel better after Sam does my hair, so I feel I can try to play even better!” |
